Norbert Wiener’s big warning wasn’t about machines becoming “too smart.” It was about feedback becoming too powerful to ignore.

That sounds abstract until you look at an energy grid in December: peak demand spikes, renewables swing with weather, battery assets chase market signals, and operators juggle reliability with cost. That whole system runs on feedback loops—some physical (frequency, voltage), some economic (price, dispatch), and increasingly, some algorithmic (forecasting, optimization, anomaly detection). If you work in energy, utilities, grid tech, or automation, Wiener’s 75-year-old ideas aren’t history. They’re design requirements.

IEEE Spectrum recently published a short poem honoring Wiener’s The Human Use of Human Beings at 75. In robotics and automation, engineers learn early that a fast control loop can outperform a slow one—right up until it becomes unstable. The same is happening in modern grids:

  • BESS responding in milliseconds can support frequency, but can also amplify poorly damped dynamics if control settings clash.
  • Forecast-driven dispatch reduces cost, but can create herding behavior if many assets follow the same optimization logic.
  • Automated demand response can flatten peaks, but if everyone sheds load at the same trigger, you can get rebound spikes.

Here’s the stance I’ll take: AI in critical infrastructure should be treated like automation, not analytics. If a model’s output changes setpoints, schedules, or switching decisions, it belongs in the same risk category as a control system.

“Every web conceals its spider”: why AI control in energy makes people uneasy

The poem includes the line: “Every web conceals its spider.” That’s a clean way to describe what operators feel when AI enters the loop: hidden agency.

In utilities, unease usually isn’t philosophical. It’s operational:

  • What exactly is the model optimizing—cost, emissions, SAIDI/SAIFI risk, asset life?
  • What happens when telemetry drops out, sensors drift, or the data distribution shifts?
  • Can we explain to regulators (and our own incident review board) why the system did what it did?

A practical rule: don’t ship “black-box control,” ship “bounded automation”

You can absolutely use ML and optimization in grid operations. But the safest pattern I’ve seen is bounded automation:

  1. Hard constraints first (equipment ratings, protection margins, interconnection limits)
  2. Conservative fallback modes (rule-based or classical control if confidence drops)
  3. Human override that actually works (not a ticketing process)
  4. Auditable decision traces (inputs, model version, constraint set, action taken)

This maps directly to robotics safety thinking: collaborative robots succeed because they’re designed around constraints, sensing confidence, and predictable stop behavior—not because they’re “smart.”

From Wiener to smart grid AI: what “human use” means in 2025 utilities

Wiener argued (and the poem echoes) that the goal isn’t to replace humans—it’s to create “feedback loops of love and grace” between humans and machines. Translate that into energy and it becomes: AI should increase operator bandwidth, not remove operator agency.

Let’s get specific. In energy & utilities, AI commonly shows up in three “automation adjacency” zones:

1) Predictive maintenance (robots, drones, and model-driven work orders)

Answer first: Predictive maintenance is valuable when it turns noisy condition data into prioritized, defensible actions.

In the robotics & automation context, this is where AI often meets physical work:

  • Drones capturing thermography of transmission components
  • Crawlers/robots inspecting boilers, tanks, and pipes
  • Computer vision detecting vegetation encroachment or insulator damage
  • Models predicting transformer health or battery degradation

The Wiener-aligned mistake is making the model the decider. A better pattern is:

  • Model produces risk scores + drivers (top contributing signals)
  • System generates recommended inspections (not automatic outages)
  • Workforce tools capture feedback labels (false alarm, confirmed defect, severity)
  • Maintenance outcomes feed the next training cycle

That last bullet is cybernetics in action: the system improves because human feedback becomes part of the loop, not an afterthought.

2) Grid optimization (forecasting, dispatch, and constraint management)

Answer first: AI improves grid optimization when it respects physical constraints and measures uncertainty explicitly.

Most utilities and grid operators now run some form of:

  • Load and renewable generation forecasting
  • Congestion and loss minimization
  • Volt/VAR optimization
  • BESS charge/discharge scheduling

Where teams get burned is treating a point forecast as reality. In winter operations, uncertainty is the headline—storms, polar outbreaks, fuel constraints, correlated outages.

Actionable move: require probabilistic outputs (prediction intervals) for any forecast that drives operations. Then use automation rules like:

  • If uncertainty widens beyond threshold → switch to conservative dispatch
  • If forecast error exceeds control limit → freeze aggressive setpoint changes

This is classic feedback control thinking applied to ML: monitor error, adapt behavior, and keep the system stable.

3) System monitoring (anomaly detection that doesn’t cry wolf)

Answer first: Anomaly detection only earns trust when it’s tuned to operator workflows and consequence.

It’s tempting to throw an anomaly detector at SCADA/PMU streams and call it “AI monitoring.” The operational reality: if you alert too often, you train people to ignore you.

A better design is consequence-based alerting:

  • Tier 1: anomalies that are interesting (logged, no page)
  • Tier 2: anomalies that are actionable (ticket, scheduled review)
  • Tier 3: anomalies that are urgent (page, immediate playbook)

And make the model explain itself in operator terms:

  • “Frequency oscillation energy rising in 0.2–0.6 Hz band”
  • “Transformer cooling fan current deviates from normal duty cycle”
  • “Battery auxiliary load increased 18% vs baseline at same ambient temp”

No mysticism. No vague “confidence score” without context.

Control vs. freedom: why responsible AI is non-negotiable in critical infrastructure

The poem’s most utility-relevant line might be: “Control, yes, but rare freedom to some degree—freedom’s always a contingency.”

Energy systems don’t have the luxury of “move fast and fix it later.” When AI participates in control decisions, responsible AI stops being an ethics slide and becomes a reliability practice.

Here’s a concrete checklist I recommend for AI in energy automation projects:

  1. Define the control boundary

    • Is the model advisory, or does it actuate?
    • What’s the maximum allowed rate of change in actions?
  2. Measure and enforce uncertainty

    • Prediction intervals, not just point estimates
    • Policies for “low confidence” behavior
  3. Build observability like it’s a protection system

    • Input data health checks
    • Drift detection and model performance tracking
    • Versioning and rollback
  4. Make incident review possible

    • Store the features used (or a reproducible snapshot)
    • Store constraint sets and optimization results
  5. Design for operator dignity

    • Give explanations aligned to operational language
    • Provide override paths and fast escalation

That last item is not soft. In my experience, operator dignity is the difference between adoption and sabotage. If AI makes skilled people feel managed by an invisible system, you’ll get workarounds—and you’ll deserve them.

A “commerce among us”: the best human-AI interface is a contract

The poem ends with a proposal: “We are old enough to be friends. Let each kind be kind to the other.”

Friendship is a nice metaphor. In operations, the better word is contract.

A human-AI contract in energy looks like:

  • The AI commits to: bounded actions, transparent assumptions, predictable failure modes
  • Humans commit to: providing labels, resolving ambiguities, maintaining sensors and data quality

When that contract is explicit, AI becomes a force multiplier. When it’s implicit, AI becomes a rumor mill—“the model is acting up again”—and the loop breaks.

Start with one pilot asset or one operational decision, then instrument it like a control engineer:

  • Set guardrails (constraints, rate limits, fallback behavior)
  • Close the loop with human feedback (labels, operator notes, outcomes)
