And as more energy and utilities teams put AI into grid operations (forecasting, outage prediction, DER orchestration, customer analytics), the question legal and compliance leaders keep circling back to is blunt: Can we prove this system is accountable, privacy-safe, transparent, and not biased?

That pressure is rising as regulators sharpen their posture on automated decision-making and as buyers ask harder procurement questions. In December 2025, IEEE’s Standards Association expanded its CertifAIEd program with two AI ethics certifications: one aimed at people who assess AI systems, and another aimed at AI products that want a recognized certification mark.

CertifAIEd is an IEEE Standards Association ethics program that offers certifications for both professionals and products. It’s grounded in an IEEE AI ethics framework and methodology organized around four pillars:

  1. Accountability
  2. Privacy
  3. Transparency
  4. Avoiding bias

It’s not a promise that an AI system will never fail. No certification can do that. What it can do—if used properly—is force organizations to answer the questions that legal and compliance teams end up answering anyway:

  • Who is responsible when the model causes harm?
  • What data is collected, retained, and shared?
  • Can affected people understand and challenge outcomes?
  • What bias testing exists, and how often is it repeated?

IEEE’s program also references criteria connected to AI ontological specifications released under Creative Commons licenses, aligning the program with a broader move toward shared vocabularies and structured claims about AI behavior.

The two certifications: professional vs. product

The key move by IEEE is splitting certification into (1) who assesses and (2) what gets assessed. That mirrors how mature compliance programs work in utilities: qualified assessors plus documented controls.

Professional certification: building internal AI assessors

The IEEE CertifAIEd professional certification is designed to train people to assess autonomous intelligent systems (AIS) against IEEE’s methodology.

Eligibility: IEEE notes that applicants need at least one year of experience using AI tools or systems in their organization’s processes or work functions. Crucially, this isn’t limited to engineers.

That detail is a big deal for utilities because some of the most consequential AI decisions sit outside data science:

  • Regulatory and compliance teams reviewing algorithmic impacts
  • Procurement teams evaluating vendor AI claims
  • Customer operations and credit teams using decision automation
  • Cybersecurity and privacy teams assessing data pathways

The IEEE CertifAIEd product certification assesses whether an organization’s AI tool conforms to the IEEE framework and continuously aligns with legal and regulatory principles, explicitly including the EU AI Act.

That “continuous alignment” wording matters. Utilities operate in a world of ongoing obligations—NERC CIP controls, reliability standards, privacy commitments, and change management. AI models change too:

A defensible position includes:

A pragmatic path: where to start in the next 30 days

If you’re a utility leader responsible for AI risk, you don’t need to certify everything tomorrow. You need to start where risk is highest and measurement is feasible.

Step 1: Pick two “high scrutiny” AI systems

Choose systems that are either:

  • If you’re building a mature governance program: you’ll likely use both—assessors to run reviews and product certification as a supplier requirement for select categories.

A simple rule: certify the people when the process is your bottleneck; certify the product when the vendor is your bottleneck.

What certifications won’t solve (and how to avoid false confidence)

Certifications are useful, but they can become a compliance crutch if leadership treats them as a substitute for operational controls.

Watch for these failure patterns:

  • “Certified once, ignored forever”: Models degrade. Your controls must include monitoring.
  • Scope games: Vendors may certify a component while your implementation introduces new risks.
  • Paper compliance: Great policies, no logs, no audits, no incident drills.

The fix is straightforward: pair certification with internal requirements for drift monitoring, periodic reassessment, and incident response testing.

Utilities are heading toward a world where AI governance looks a lot like reliability engineering: defined roles, documented controls, routine testing, and evidence you can produce on demand.

IEEE’s two new AI ethics certifications are a signal of where the market is going. Buyers want proof, regulators want traceability, and customers want fairness they can feel. If your AI program can’t satisfy those three groups at the same time, it will slow down—even if the model is technically brilliant.
