Here’s the part many people miss: the problem isn’t only “more traffic.” AI changes the shape of traffic. Networks that were tuned for downlink-heavy streaming and browsing are now being asked to handle uplink-intensive, latency-sensitive, edge-to-cloud data flows. If you’re a telco, that shift isn’t a future trend. It’s already hitting enterprise customers that are running AI in production and noticing the pain: downtime, latency, and throughput constraints.

Nokia’s survey also highlights a reality across sectors: more than 80% of businesses believe AI is introducing risks, and cybersecurity is emerging as the top AI use case.

That should reshape how telcos package AI and connectivity together.

Telcos have a strong angle here because they sit on:

  • Network-level visibility (traffic patterns, DDoS signals, anomalous device behavior)
  • Identity and policy control points (SIM/eSIM, enterprise routing, private APNs, SASE integration)
  • The ability to enforce security closer to the edge

A practical stance I’ve found useful: sell “secure AI connectivity” as an outcome, not a toolkit. Enterprises don’t want ten more dashboards; they want fewer incidents and faster containment.

What telco leaders should do in Q1 2026 (a practical checklist)

If Nokia’s warning is right—and the survey numbers suggest it is—then the next 90 days matter. Not because you can rebuild infrastructure in a quarter, but because you can instrument the network and operationalize AI-driven decisions.

Here’s a pragmatic checklist that aligns network upgrades with AI network optimization:

  1. Map AI traffic sources, not just total traffic. Identify industrial sites, healthcare hubs, logistics corridors, campuses, and data center interconnect paths.
  2. Add uplink-centric KPIs to exec dashboards. If leadership only sees downlink averages, you’ll fund the wrong upgrades.
  3. Stand up an “AI readiness” service tier. Bundle performance assurance, edge routing options, and security monitoring into an enterprise offer.
  4. Deploy closed-loop assurance where it hurts most. Start with the top 20 enterprise sites by revenue or incident frequency.

Nokia’s infrastructure warning is uncomfortable, but it’s also clarifying. AI adoption is already real, and its network demands are already different. Uplink-heavy, edge-driven workloads will punish networks that were optimized for yesterday’s traffic mix.
