Sparkle didn’t just “add another node” in Chile this December. It added a new control point for latency, redundancy, and service quality across an entire corridor that connects South America to the US.

The move: a new Point of Presence (PoP) in Santiago, hosted at Ascenty, equipped with a 400GBE-enabled router and integrated into Sparkle’s Tier-1 IP backbone (Seabone). On paper, it’s a classic infrastructure expansion story. In practice, it’s a reminder of something most telco teams learn the hard way: network performance isn’t only about raw capacity—it's about where you terminate traffic, how you route it, and how fast you can react when conditions change.

This post is part of our AI in Telecommunications series, so I’m going to take a stance: new PoPs create the opportunity for better networks; AI is what turns that opportunity into measurable outcomes—lower latency, fewer incidents, faster mitigation, and a more consistent customer experience.

A new PoP is really a bet on reliability

A PoP is where an operator puts compute, routing, and interconnection close to customers and partners. The reason this matters is simple: distance and routing complexity create delay and failure modes. The closer you are to the traffic source and sink, the more control you have.

Sparkle already had nodes in Santiago and Valparaíso. Adding another PoP in Santiago increases route diversity and fault isolation. That’s not theoretical redundancy; it’s the difference between:

  • a single maintenance window causing customer-facing packet loss, versus traffic shifting cleanly to another path
  • a localized fiber cut creating a regional incident, versus a contained blip with minimal SLA impact
  • “we’ll investigate” after customer tickets pile up, versus proactive mitigation driven by telemetry

This is why the press release language around “diversification and redundancy” is more than PR. In modern IP networks, redundancy only helps if you can fail over fast, predictably, and safely.

Why Santiago is strategically “sticky” for traffic

Santiago is a gravity point for Chilean enterprise connectivity and for content ecosystems serving the country. It’s also a sensible anchor for regional aggregation when you consider access to subsea paths and metro data center interconnection.

By placing the PoP at Ascenty—an expanding data center hub—Sparkle positions itself where network operators, ISPs, OTTs, CDNs, and application providers already want to peer, cache, and exchange traffic.

That’s important for lead-gen-minded telecom teams because it signals something buyers value: lower time-to-interconnect.

What changes when a PoP runs at 400GbE

Sparkle’s announcement highlights the Curie subsea cable connecting Chile directly to California, enabling low-latency links to the US. It also references other terrestrial and subsea systems—Monet, Seabras-1, and the upcoming Manta route—creating diversified paths between South and North America.

From a connectivity buyer’s perspective, diversified routes deliver three tangible benefits:

  • Resilience: an outage on one system doesn’t take you down.
  • Performance options: you can pick paths that match application needs.
  • Negotiation leverage: diversity reduces dependence on any single upstream.

But redundancy can disappoint if it’s handled manually.

Where AI earns its keep: multi-path decisioning

When you have multiple viable paths (Curie vs. alternative routes), the decision isn’t “which is shortest.” It’s “which is best right now for this traffic class?”

A mature approach uses intent-based routing principles:

  • Voice and real-time collaboration: prioritize jitter/loss thresholds.
  • Payments and API transactions: prioritize consistency and packet integrity.
  • Bulk transfers and backups: prioritize cost and throughput.

AI models can recommend or trigger actions such as:

  • shifting a subset of prefixes to a cleaner path when loss trends upward
  • rebalancing traffic across transit providers to avoid micro-congestion
  • detecting when a route change is likely to be unstable (flapping) and suppressing risky updates

This is exactly why global expansion and AI go together: the bigger your route graph, the harder it is to manage by instinct.

Security services at the PoP: DDoS is the day-to-day reality

Let’s be blunt: if you run IP transit services in 2025, DDoS isn’t an edge case. It’s routine. And the business risk isn’t just downtime—it's how often your mitigation introduces collateral damage (false positives, latency spikes, broken sessions).

AI doesn’t replace scrubbing capacity. It improves how you apply it.

Useful AI patterns for DDoS protection at PoPs include:

  • Behavior baselining per customer/prefix: spotting attacks that look “low and slow,” not just volumetric floods.
  • Adaptive filtering: adjusting thresholds and signatures based on observed traffic evolution.
  • Blast-radius control: automatically scoping mitigation to the smallest safe set of flows.

One line I’ve found helpful when explaining this internally: DDoS mitigation is a classification problem under time pressure. AI helps you classify faster with less collateral impact.

Virtual NAP: interconnection without the heavy lift

A Virtual NAP (virtual access to major Internet Exchange Points without building physical presence) is attractive because it reduces capex and deployment time for customers.

Operationally, it increases the need for:

  • accurate performance monitoring across virtual interconnect paths
  • clear SLAs and per-peer visibility
  • smart path selection when a virtual exchange route degrades

AI-based monitoring can help correlate issues across layers (transport, peering, application signals) so the NOC isn’t stuck chasing ghosts.

What telco and ISP leaders should do next (a practical checklist)

Sparkle’s footprint in the Americas now totals 54 PoPs across multiple countries, and the new Santiago location strengthens the Chile-to-US corridor via Curie while supporting diversified alternatives. That’s a classic infrastructure scaling story—but the subtext is more interesting.

As networks become more distributed, the operational model has to change. You can’t staff your way out of complexity. You need systems that observe more, decide faster, and act safely.
