A lot of AI conversations have turned into a grim checklist: misinformation, deepfakes, workforce displacement, extractive data practices, and huge power draw from model training and inference. That mood shows up in research circles too—and it’s not just cynicism. It’s pattern recognition.

But here’s the problem for energy and utilities leaders: if the most technically capable people decide AI is a lost cause, the field doesn’t pause—it gets shaped by whoever’s loudest, richest, or least accountable. In critical infrastructure, that’s not an academic worry. It’s operational risk.

A “positive vision” for AI in energy doesn’t mean feel-good slogans. It means clear outcomes you can measure and defend in front of regulators, boards, and customers.

In practice, responsible AI in energy and utilities should aim for four non-negotiables:

  1. Reliability over novelty: If the model’s “smart” but can’t be validated under real conditions, it doesn’t belong in operations.
  2. Safety and resilience by design: AI must fail gracefully, degrade predictably, and never become a single point of failure.
  3. Fairness and accountability: AI-driven decisions (disconnects, inspections, restoration priority) must be explainable and contestable.
  4. Sustainability: You can’t justify climate goals while quietly scaling compute and storage without an energy and carbon plan.

The scientific community’s push for a more constructive AI vision matters here, because energy is where AI’s benefits and harms get amplified. A bad recommendation system is annoying. A bad grid model can cascade.

Why responsible AI governance is now a grid and procurement issue

Responsible AI often gets parked with legal or compliance. That’s a mistake. In energy, governance is a technical control system—the same way protective relays are governance for faults.

Governance connects directly to grid optimization

Grid optimization models increasingly influence:

  • congestion management and dispatch planning
  • distributed energy resource (DER) coordination
  • voltage optimization
  • loss reduction
  • dynamic line rating and capacity forecasting

These are not “analytics.” These are operational levers.

A responsible AI governance model for grid optimization typically needs:

  • model risk tiering (decision support vs. semi-automated vs. automated control)
  • pre-deployment validation under seasonal extremes (winter peaks, summer heat waves, storm patterns)
  • drift monitoring tied to physical reality (sensor changes, topology updates, new DER interconnections)
  • human override paths with clear accountability

If your governance can’t answer “what happens when it’s wrong?” it’s not governance.

Governance also belongs in supplier selection

In the supply chain & procurement context, responsible AI shows up fast when you’re buying:

  • advanced distribution management systems (ADMS)
  • asset performance management (APM)
  • AI-based inspection platforms (drones, LiDAR, computer vision)
  • large language model tooling for customer ops, field ops, and knowledge management

Procurement teams should require that vendors provide:

  • documented training data provenance and rights
  • model limitations and known failure modes
  • audit logs and incident response commitments
  • clear boundaries for data usage (especially operational telemetry)
  • energy use disclosures for compute-heavy workflows

If a vendor can’t tell you how the model fails, they haven’t tested it—at least not in the way utilities need.

Four actions energy leaders can take: reform, resist, use, renovate

The most practical part of the “positive vision” argument is that scientists and engineers shouldn’t only warn about harms—they should actively shape outcomes. For energy and utilities teams, that translates into four actions you can implement as a program.

1) Reform: build ethical, auditable AI into the lifecycle

“Reform” sounds political, but in utilities it’s mostly process.

Do this:

  • Define responsible AI acceptance criteria the same way you define interconnection requirements.
  • Build traceability into the AI lifecycle: data → features → model versions → decisions → outcomes.
  • Require red-team testing for edge cases: storms, wildfires, cyber incidents, telecom outages.

A useful standard to adopt internally is a simple rule:

If you can’t reproduce a model decision from logged inputs and versioned code, you can’t operate it.

2) Resist: stop harmful AI use cases before they become “normal”

Energy companies are tempting targets for AI misuse:

  • synthetic voice “vishing” against call centers and field crews
  • deepfake video and social engineering targeting executives
  • automated disinformation during outages or rate cases

Resisting harm means documenting and blocking it.

Operational steps that work:

  • implement call-back verification for high-risk customer actions (bank changes, service transfers)
  • train staff on deepfake and voice cloning threat patterns (especially during storms)
  • add out-of-band verification for switching orders and urgent approvals

This is responsible AI too—because your organization’s AI posture includes how you defend against AI-enabled attackers.

3) Responsibly use: focus on “boring AI” that pays back fast

The best responsible AI wins in energy are often unglamorous. They’re measurable.

Examples that tend to deliver real value while staying controllable:

  • predictive maintenance for transformers, breakers, and rotating equipment
  • vegetation management prioritization combining LiDAR/imagery with outage history
  • load forecasting with transparent features and operator review
  • spare parts optimization for long-lead assets (critical for supply chain resilience)

In supply chain and procurement terms, responsible AI often means:

  • better demand forecasting for spares and consumables
  • supplier risk scoring tied to geopolitical and climate disruption
  • automated contract review with human sign-off and audit trails

If you need a north star: use AI where you can measure impact, monitor drift, and keep humans accountable.

4) Renovate: update institutions that AI is already pressuring

Utilities run on institutional muscle memory: standards, training programs, incident command structures, union agreements, regulator relationships.

AI stresses all of them.

Renovation looks like:

  • updating operating procedures to include AI-supported decisions (and how to override them)
  • creating model change management that mirrors OT change control
  • aligning AI KPIs with reliability metrics (SAIDI/SAIFI), not just “accuracy”
  • clarifying who is accountable when AI advice is followed—and when it’s ignored

This is where most programs fail: they add models but don’t modernize the system around the models.

The energy-and-climate tension: AI’s power draw isn’t a side issue

AI’s energy demand is now a reputational and strategic issue for utilities. Not because AI is “bad,” but because unmanaged compute growth collides with decarbonization commitments.

If your utility is adopting large models (or enabling them through vendor platforms), responsible AI includes:

  • selecting architectures that minimize inference costs
  • using smaller task-specific models where possible
  • scheduling non-urgent compute to off-peak / high-renewable periods
  • setting internal budgets for compute and storage just like you do for fleet fuel

This matters in procurement too. Vendors rarely volunteer their compute footprint unless you ask.

A practical procurement move: require an AI energy profile in RFP responses—how much compute per 1,000 predictions, expected scaling curves, and whether workloads can be shifted in time.

What “responsible AI” means for supply chain & procurement teams in utilities

If you work in procurement, you’re not “supporting” AI. You’re shaping it.

Here’s a responsible AI checklist that’s specific enough to use in a sourcing cycle:

  • Data rights: What data is used to train or fine-tune models? Who owns derived artifacts?
  • Security boundaries: Is operational telemetry isolated? Where is it stored? Who can access it?
  • Explainability: Can the vendor provide reason codes or drivers for predictions?
  • Testing evidence: Do they have documented results under real-world conditions (seasonality, outages, sensor failures)?
  • Monitoring: What drift detection exists? What alerts are generated? Who responds?
  • Exit strategy: Can you export models, features, and logs if you change vendors?

One opinionated note: avoid procurement language that only asks for “AI-powered” capabilities. Require measurable behaviors (false positive tolerances, latency, uptime, auditability). “AI-powered” is not a spec.

Practical next steps: build a responsible AI pilot that can scale

If you’re trying to turn responsible AI from principles into delivery, start with a pilot that’s constrained and high-value.

A strong pattern for utilities is:

  1. Pick one operational domain (for example, transformer health scoring).
  2. Define success metrics that operations trusts (not just model metrics).
  3. Run a parallel period where humans decide and the model advises.
  4. Log everything. Treat this like a protection scheme trial.
  5. Decide upfront what would cause you to pause or roll back.

You’ll learn more from one well-instrumented pilot than from six months of internal debate.

Responsible AI isn’t about slowing down AI. It’s about making sure the wins survive contact with reality—regulators, storms, shifting grid conditions, and the messy complexity of supply chains.
