Public reporting has tied this pattern to infiltrations impacting at least 64 US companies, with estimates that the true number is higher. And each worker has been estimated to generate up to $300,000 annually, funding sanctioned activity while creating opportunities for IP theft and persistent access.
For security leaders, the lesson is blunt: HR workflows can produce security incidents with the same blast radius as a breached VPN.
Why detection keeps failing (and what AI can do better)
The problem isn’t that companies aren’t buying tools. It’s that many programs are built on two shaky assumptions:

- Device trust scoring: Reputation, jailbreak/root indicators, emulator detection, geolocation plausibility, and hardware-backed attestation.
- Behavioral biometrics: Typing cadence, mouse dynamics, navigation patterns, session rhythm. Synthetic “people” struggle to stay consistent over time.
- Graph and link analysis: Connections between identities, addresses, devices, payment instruments, and account behavior. Fraud rings reuse infrastructure.
The goal isn’t to “detect a fake face.” The goal is to detect an identity that can’t behave like one real human across time.
What synthetic identities cost enterprises: fines, extortion, and stolen IP

Start with roles that touch source code, customer data, payment flows, or admin consoles.

People are bad at spotting deepfakes. Don’t ask them to be forensic analysts.
