A practical playbook: what to do in the first 24 hours
If you’re running Salesforce plus any customer-success or CRM-adjacent integrations, your first-day playbook should be predictable and fast. You don’t need heroics. You need discipline.
Step 1: Triage the integration blast radius
Answer first: Identify which connected apps can read/write sensitive objects and which have long-lived tokens.
Inventory:
- connected apps and OAuth grants
- service accounts used by integrations
- tokens with refresh capability
- integrations with write permissions to core objects
If you can’t generate this inventory quickly, that’s the gap to fix before the next incident.
Step 2: Rotate and revoke with intent
Do the uncomfortable thing early: break the integration temporarily if you need to.
- Revoke and rotate OAuth tokens and API keys for the relevant connected app
- Reduce scopes to least privilege (remove “write” if not essential)
- Reauthorize only after validation and vendor guidance
Speed matters. Attackers with valid tokens don’t need persistence mechanisms.
Step 3: Hunt for API-shaped exfiltration
Look for patterns that reflect bulk access, not just logins:
- mass exports
- sequential reads across large object sets
- repeated queries for high-value fields
- spikes in
readvolume with low corresponding business activity

Step 4: Apply conditional access and IP controls correctly

- Continuous monitoring of connected app behavior, not quarterly reviews
- Least-privilege scopes per integration, enforced and revalidated
- Token hygiene: short lifetimes where possible, rapid revoke capability, tight refresh rules
- AI-assisted investigation: summarization of anomalous sessions, object access, and export-like behavior
- Automated response that can contain without waiting for a human to read every log line
