Most security programs aren’t short on threat intelligence. They’re short on follow-through.

That gap showed up clearly in the Predict 2025 conversations: everyone can “see” more threats, but the winners are the teams that can stop them automatically and repeatedly—even at 2 a.m., even when staffing is thin, even when attackers change tooling mid-campaign.

This post is part of our AI in Cybersecurity series, and here’s my stance: AI is most valuable when it turns intelligence into operational action—faster triage, better prioritization, fewer handoffs, and more consistent containment. Not AI as a shiny dashboard. AI as an execution engine.

From “more data” to “more stops”: what AI changes

AI changes the unit of work from individual alerts to adversary behavior. That’s the difference between whack-a-mole and proactive defense.

A modern SOC faces three compounding problems:

  • Volume: blocked domains, phishing attempts, low-severity detections, and vulnerability noise pile up faster than humans can validate.
  • Variability: attackers rotate infrastructure, payloads, and tradecraft to break simple rules.
  • Velocity: AI-enabled offensive tooling compresses time from recon to exploitation.

Threat intelligence helps, but only if it connects directly to decisions: what to patch today, which vendor to escalate now, which detections to tune this week, and which suspicious “noise” is actually a campaign.

Intelligence-to-action is a workflow, not a report

One memorable line from the Predict theme is essentially this: intelligence without context is just information. The practical interpretation is harsh but true—if your intel lives in PDFs, tickets that no one reads, or weekly briefs, it won’t change outcomes.

AI is the bridge because it can:

  1. Enrich and correlate signals across tools and sources quickly.
  2. Cluster activity into campaigns and likely actors.
  3. Recommend actions in the language your stack uses (queries, rules, playbooks).
  4. Automate the safe parts and escalate the ambiguous parts to humans.

That last point matters. The right design isn’t “AI replaces analysts.” It’s “AI handles the repetitive steps so analysts spend time where judgment actually matters.”

Know your adversary faster: AI for threat profiling and TTP modeling

Proactive defense starts with knowing who you’re dealing with and how they operate. Predict sessions highlighted profiling threat actors, tracking campaign evolution, and adversary emulation. That’s not academic. It’s how you make defenses measurable.

Here’s the operational win: when you can map activity to a specific adversary’s TTPs (tactics, techniques, and procedures), you stop treating each alert as new. You treat it as part of a playbook you’ve already rehearsed.

“Signal to story” is the triage speed multiplier

Most SOC triage is slowed down by the same two questions:

  • “Is this real?”
  • “If it’s real, how bad is it for us?”

AI can compress that by attaching context at the moment of detection:

  • Likely threat actor or cluster
  • Known infrastructure patterns (C2 behavior, domain age, hosting traits)
  • Typical targets and industries
  • Common next steps in the kill chain

When teams build a habit of attributing at least to a cluster, they also get better at prioritization. A phishing attempt tied to a coordinated campaign is not “just another phish.” It’s early warning.

Adversary emulation becomes practical when AI keeps it current

Adversary emulation programs often fail for a boring reason: they get stale.

AI helps keep emulation aligned to reality by continuously:

  • ingesting new reports, detections, and observed infrastructure shifts
  • updating technique mappings
  • proposing detection content changes (queries, rule logic) based on observed drift

If your red team exercise doesn’t reflect what’s being exploited this quarter, it’s theater. AI makes it easier to run more frequent, narrower tests that validate specific controls.

The “ignored noise” problem: AI-powered pattern recognition in the SOC

The breadcrumbs your SOC ignores are often the earliest indicators of a real intrusion. Blocked domains and low-severity alerts are easy to dismiss because they’re common. They’re also where campaigns hide.

The fix is not “alert on everything.” It’s grouping and patterning.

What to automate (and what not to)

A pragmatic AI-in-the-SOC rule:

  • Automate anything that’s repeatable and reversible.
  • Escalate anything that’s ambiguous and high-impact.

Examples of good automation targets:

  • enrichment lookups and entity resolution (IP/domain/hash/user/device)
  • deduplication and alert grouping
  • campaign clustering and similarity scoring
  • drafting investigation summaries and recommended next steps

Examples where humans should stay in control:

  • business impact calls (what “critical” means for your environment)
  • containment that risks downtime (blocking broad IP ranges, disabling accounts)
  • decisions with legal/PR implications (extortion, disclosure, law enforcement)

This “autonomy with guardrails” model matches what mature teams described: humans still lead, but they lead with better information and less manual drag.

Stop chasing CVSS: prioritize what’s exploited

Predict discussions also pushed back on treating CVSS as the center of vulnerability management. I agree. CVSS is a useful input, but it’s not a schedule.

A workable AI-driven vulnerability prioritization loop looks like this:

  1. Discover your real attack surface (including forgotten internet-facing assets).
  2. Join assets to ownership (who can actually fix it).
  3. Prioritize by exploitation evidence (active exploitation and attacker interest).
  4. Score by business exposure (is it customer-facing, privileged, or sensitive?).
  5. Generate remediation guidance that’s specific enough to act on.

This is where AI does meaningful work: connecting technical exposure to exploitation reality and organizational context.

Third-party risk can’t be annual anymore: AI for continuous monitoring

Third-party risk management is now a daily workflow. Vendor exposure changes with vulnerabilities, cloud misconfigurations, and geopolitical shifts—often faster than your procurement cycle.

One hard stat from a widely cited industry report: 30% of breaches involve a third party. That number alone is enough to justify continuous monitoring instead of point-in-time questionnaires.

A “living” third-party risk workflow you can actually run

If you manage thousands of suppliers, the only scalable approach is triage by criticality plus continuous intelligence.

A practical model:

  • Tier vendors by business impact (revenue dependency, data sensitivity, operational continuity).
  • Monitor continuously for exposed services, leaked credentials, security incidents, and high-risk vulnerabilities.
  • Trigger vendor workflows automatically:
    • request confirmation of patch status
    • require compensating controls
    • escalate to procurement or legal if SLAs are breached

AI fits because it can correlate weak signals (a vendor’s exposed VPN + a relevant exploitation trend + suspicious scanning) into a coherent risk story that your vendor management team can act on.

Don’t just score risk—decide what happens next

The mistake I see: teams generate a risk score and stop.

A better approach is to attach pre-agreed actions to score ranges, for example:

  • High risk: executive owner notified within 24 hours; vendor response required
  • Medium: remediation plan requested; reassess in 7 days
  • Low: monitor; no action unless conditions change

AI helps keep those conditions updated so your actions aren’t based on stale assumptions.

Always-on detection: where AI actually earns trust

Threats don’t sleep, so detection can’t be office-hours only. Predict’s emphasis on 24/7 threat hunting and autonomous detection lines up with what most teams want but can’t staff.

The goal isn’t “full autonomy.” The goal is continuous coverage with human oversight.

Autonomous operations that reduce toil (without creating chaos)

Autonomous detection works when it reduces repetitive work and improves consistency:

  • continuous enrichment that updates risk as new intel arrives
  • automatic correlation across internal telemetry and external sources
  • translating detection logic into the query formats your tools need

The business value is simple: fewer missed handoffs, faster containment, and less burnout.

Nation-state-style recon is visible—if you’re watching the right layer

Predict also highlighted campaigns targeting edge devices and telecom infrastructure. The operational lesson isn’t “be afraid of nation-states.” It’s this:

Adversaries often expose themselves during reconnaissance and C2 setup. If your program can observe scanning patterns, infrastructure reuse, and communications behavior, you can detect intent before impact.

AI helps by spotting weak-but-consistent signals across time: small anomalies that humans won’t connect during a busy week.

Make threat intelligence a business accelerator (not a cost center)

Threat intelligence becomes politically “real” when it protects revenue, uptime, and brand equity. Leaders at Predict emphasized aligning programs to business drivers and building priority intelligence requirements (PIRs).

Here’s what works in practice: pick metrics that are hard to argue with.

Metrics that prove intelligence-to-impact

If you need to justify investment in AI security operations and threat intelligence automation, track outcomes like:

  • Mean Time to Triage (MTTT) reduced by X%
  • Mean Time to Contain (MTTC) reduced by X%
  • Patch latency for exploited vulnerabilities reduced (days-to-fix)
  • Third-party high-risk exposure reduced (count and duration)
  • Detection coverage for top adversary techniques increased (mapped controls)

These metrics translate well to exec conversations because they describe speed, risk reduction, and resilience—not tooling.

Cross-team coordination isn’t optional

Silos kill response. Your CTI team, SOC, vulnerability management, IT ops, and vendor management need shared workflows.

AI can help here too: it standardizes summaries, automates ticket routing, and keeps a single “story” of an incident updated as new intel lands.

A useful rule: if intelligence can’t trigger a decision inside an existing workflow, it’s not operational intelligence yet.

What to do next: a practical 30-day plan

If you’re trying to turn threat intelligence into action with AI, don’t start with a massive platform overhaul. Start with one loop you can measure.

  1. Pick one high-friction workflow (vuln prioritization, phishing triage, third-party monitoring, or alert correlation).
  2. Define what “good” looks like in numbers (MTTT, MTTC, exploited-vuln patch SLA, vendor response time).
  3. Add AI where it removes toil (enrichment, clustering, summarization, routing).
  4. Keep humans as final approvers for high-impact actions.
  5. Review weekly: what did AI accelerate, and where did it hallucinate, over-prioritize, or miss context?

You’ll know you’re on the right track when the team stops saying, “We saw it,” and starts saying, “We stopped it.”

Threat intelligence automation isn’t about seeing more. It’s about building a security operation that can act repeatedly, consistently, and fast—at the scale attackers already operate. As AI in cybersecurity matures, the organizations that win won’t be the ones with the most data. They’ll be the ones with the most reliable execution.
