It’s not just that people still click links in texts; it’s that attackers have turned smishing into a repeatable supply chain with templates, target lists, spam infrastructure, and cash-out operations. And the cash-out isn’t theoretical—these groups are converting stolen card details into Apple Pay and Google Wallet enrollments, then waiting days before spending to reduce the chance of immediate detection.

If you’re responsible for protecting employees, customers, or transactions, the question isn’t whether you “train users better.” It’s whether you can detect and disrupt the smishing-to-wallet pipeline fast enough. This is exactly where AI in cybersecurity earns its keep: pattern recognition at scale, automated triage, and real-time response.

What the Lighthouse smishing model reveals about modern fraud

The Lighthouse case shows a simple truth: the most successful cybercrime looks more like operations than hacking.

  • Deploy protective DNS on mobile devices (managed and BYOD where possible).
  • Instrument helpdesk scripts for “I got a text about payroll/shipping/tolls.”
  • Use AI-based security analytics to cluster user reports into campaigns.

For banks, fintechs, and wallet ecosystems

  • Model wallet provisioning as a fraud event, not a normal customer action.
  • Add friction only when risk is high: step-up verification, cooling-off holds, or limits.
