A customer support ticket comes in on a Friday: “My Mac is low on storage. I followed the steps from ChatGPT and now everything’s slow.” You open the timeline and your stomach drops. There’s no sketchy installer, no obvious phishing email, no blocked download in the proxy logs. Just a user search, a click on what looks like a legitimate AI chat, and a copy‑paste command that pulled down an infostealer.

That’s the uncomfortable lesson behind a recent ClickFix-style campaign reported by Huntress: attackers are mixing SEO poisoning with legitimate AI chatbot domains (including well-known LLM platforms) to get people to execute malicious Terminal commands on their own machines. The malware family highlighted in the incident was AMOS, a macOS infostealer known for credential theft, persistence, and data collection.

This post is part of our AI in Cybersecurity series, and it’s a perfect case study of “AI vs. AI.” When adversaries use trusted AI surfaces as delivery channels, the only reliable counter is a security program that can spot behavioral anomalies, correlate weak signals, and respond fast—ideally with AI assisting the defenders, too.

ClickFix, updated: the user becomes the installer

ClickFix attacks work because they replace “download this file” with “run this command.” Instead of pushing an executable that security tools might flag, the attacker convinces the user to perform the risky action themselves—often by presenting the action as a routine fix.

The ClickFix pattern has been spreading because it aligns with how people already troubleshoot:

  • Search a symptom (“clear disk space on Mac,” “fix sync issue,” “remove pop-up virus”)
  • Click a top result
  • Follow steps without reading too closely
  • Copy-paste commands because it feels faster and “technical” (which people wrongly equate with “safe”)

The twist here is the channel. Instead of a typo-squatted site or a fake “support page,” the victim lands on what appears to be a real conversation hosted on a real AI platform—and that subtle shift dramatically lowers suspicion.

The attacker’s win isn’t better malware. It’s a better moment of trust.

Why this version is working right now

This matters in December 2025 because the “holiday help” mindset is real. IT teams are thinner, end users are rushing to close out year-end tasks, and people are more likely to self-serve fixes rather than wait for support. Attackers don’t need perfect lures—they need lures that match the season.

In this campaign, the lure is mundane: “clean up your hard drive,” “free up space,” “speed up your Mac.” Low drama. High action.

How attackers weaponize legitimate AI domains with SEO poisoning

The core technique is simple: manufacture a malicious AI chat transcript, then make search engines treat it like an authoritative troubleshooting page.

Based on Huntress’s description, the workflow looks like this:

  1. Create a prompt that produces normal-looking troubleshooting instructions, but includes a malicious command.
  2. Generate a shareable chat URL using the platform’s built-in sharing feature.
  3. Distribute that URL across forums, content farms, low-quality indexed sites, and message channels.
  4. Manipulate backlinks and relevance signals so the chat link ranks for high-intent troubleshooting keywords.

Here’s what makes this nasty:

  • Users trust the brand (the AI assistant platform) and often stop evaluating the content critically.
  • Security awareness training is misaligned: people are trained to distrust attachments and login pages, not “helpful” command-line guidance.
  • The page is “legitimate” in the narrow sense: it’s hosted where it claims to be hosted.

“No malicious download” is the point

A lot of defensive controls are still optimized for old delivery patterns:

  • Known-bad file hashes
  • Suspicious downloads
  • Attachment detonation
  • Domain reputation blocks

But if the user runs a one-liner that fetches payloads, chains scripts, or abuses built-in utilities, you’re in a different game. Living-off-the-land + user intent is a tough combination.

Why AI-enabled social engineering beats traditional phishing

Traditional phishing fights instinct. AI-assisted ClickFix exploits instinct.

Phishing often feels “off.” A weird sender. A slightly wrong logo. A URL that doesn’t match. Even non-technical users have learned to pause.

But an AI assistant telling you to run a command feels like productivity. It feels like support. It feels like a shortcut that smart people take.

I’ve found that teams underestimate this because they categorize it as “just another phishing trick.” It isn’t. This pattern is closer to trusted-helpdesk impersonation, except the “helpdesk” is a chat interface people already use every day.

What AMOS-style stealers do after execution

Infostealers like AMOS are built for speed and value. Once installed, the typical goals are:

  • Browser credential theft (saved passwords, session cookies)
  • Keychain and local secrets access
  • Crypto wallet targeting (wallet files, extensions, clipboard monitoring in some variants)
  • Persistence mechanisms so the stealer survives reboots and stays useful

The business impact is bigger than “one infected Mac.” Stealers frequently become the first domino:

  • Stolen sessions → SaaS takeover
  • SaaS takeover → internal phishing from trusted accounts
  • Privileged access → data exfiltration or ransomware staging

Defensive playbook: protect the moment of copy-paste

The best defense is to treat “copy-paste into Terminal/PowerShell” as a high-risk transaction and monitor it like one. You can’t patch human curiosity, but you can instrument outcomes.

For security teams: detect behavior, not just payloads

Start by assuming the initial access will look “normal” at the web layer. Then focus on endpoint and identity signals.

High-signal macOS behaviors to watch (examples):

  • Unusual osascript usage prompting for credentials or automating UI flows
  • New or hidden executables appearing under user home directories
  • Unexpected persistence artifacts (LaunchAgents/LaunchDaemons) created shortly after a browser session
  • Terminal commands that reach out to newly seen infrastructure or unusual ports
  • Rapid access to browser stores, keychains, or wallet-related directories after “cleanup” activity

Practical detection strategy:

  • Build rules around sequences, not single events: browser → Terminal → outbound connection → new binary → persistence.
  • Baseline what “normal” looks like for IT scripts vs. end-user machines.
  • Prioritize alerts where the user is not an engineer but is suddenly executing complex shell commands.

This is where AI in cybersecurity earns its keep: correlating weak signals across endpoint telemetry, DNS, identity logs, and process trees is exactly what machine learning-based analytics does well—especially when analysts are overloaded.

For IT leaders: set policy for “AI troubleshooting”

Most companies have policies for password managers and MFA. Very few have policies for “what employees may execute based on AI output.” That gap is now a control gap.

A workable policy doesn’t need to be heavy:

  • Employees may use AI assistants for explanations and checklists.
  • Employees may not run command-line instructions from AI chats unless:
    • the steps come from an approved internal knowledge base, or
    • the command is reviewed by IT/helpdesk, or
    • the device is a managed developer workstation in a controlled group.

Pair the policy with an enablement move: give users a fast way to ask, “Can I run this command?” A Slack workflow or helpdesk button beats a 2-hour ticket queue.

For end users: a 10-second sanity check that actually works

User training fails when it’s abstract. This needs to be concrete. Here’s the check I recommend because it’s fast and memorable:

  1. If a command starts with curl or wget piped into a shell, stop. That’s a classic download-and-execute pattern.
  2. If the command asks for your password, stop. Disk cleanup almost never requires credential prompts.
  3. If the steps mention disabling security settings, stop.
  4. If you can’t explain what the command does in one sentence, don’t run it.

If organizations reinforce just those four points, they eliminate a huge chunk of self-inflicted infections.

AI vs. AI: how to build resilience against AI-assisted malware delivery

Attackers are using AI platforms as distribution surfaces; defenders need AI to keep pace with scale and ambiguity. That doesn’t mean “buy a tool and pray.” It means upgrading your operating model.

What “AI-powered security” should do in this scenario

If you’re evaluating AI-powered cybersecurity capabilities, this is what I’d demand for a ClickFix/infostealer threat model:

  • Anomaly detection that understands user context (job role, device type, usual tooling)
  • Natural-language triage for commands and scripts (flag risky patterns, explain why)
  • Cross-domain correlation (endpoint + identity + network) with clear timelines
  • Automated containment for likely-stealer behaviors (isolate host, revoke sessions, reset tokens)
  • Fast forensic summaries that an analyst can trust and act on

The north star is simple: reduce the time between “user copy-pastes a command” and “security contains the host” from hours to minutes.

Don’t ignore the search layer

Because SEO poisoning is part of the delivery, your controls shouldn’t stop at the endpoint.

Consider:

  • Tightening web filtering categories for “low-quality indexed sites” and known content farm patterns
  • Monitoring search-driven traffic spikes to “support” or “how-to” content followed by endpoint script execution
  • Running periodic threat hunts for the terms your users commonly search (your internal telemetry already tells you what those are)

What to do next (and what to ask your vendors)

This attack style will spread because it’s cheap, scalable, and effective. Huntress predicted it could become a dominant initial access method for stealers within the next 6–18 months, and I agree with the direction: it fits how users behave, and it routes around legacy controls.

If you’re building your 2026 security roadmap, treat this as a forcing function:

  • Instrument endpoints for script execution and persistence creation.
  • Treat SaaS session theft as a first-class incident, not an afterthought.
  • Add explicit guidance for AI-assisted troubleshooting to your security awareness program.

If you’re talking to security vendors or MSSPs, ask one blunt question:

“Show me how your platform detects a user who copy-pastes a malicious Terminal command from a legitimate AI chat—and how fast you can contain it.”

Because the next wave of initial access won’t always look like a break-in. Sometimes it’ll look like a “helpful fix.”
