Workforce programs often serve learners with tight schedules and real constraints—jobs, caregiving, transportation, unstable internet, language barriers. That means:

  • Mobile check-ins matter more.
  • Accessibility defaults can’t assume a single “typical” learner.

  • Assessment requirements
  • Credential submission steps

If those aren’t visible within a few seconds, learners disengage.

  • Adjustable font sizes and contrast
  • Keyboard navigation
  • Speech-to-text where text entry is heavy
  • Notification controls (frequency, channel, timing)

The non-negotiable: learners should be able to change these settings without filing a ticket.

Customization where it counts: interface yes, learning path no

This is the most interesting tension from students: they want control over interface elements (calendars, notifications, reminders), but they don’t want an endlessly personalized learning path. They prefer a sequential path with guidance.

That makes sense. Too much personalization can feel like the system is hiding the map.

For skills development, a clear pathway is essential because credentials and job competencies are sequential by nature:

  • Safety basics before advanced equipment
  • Foundations before specialization
  • Practice before performance assessment

A strong skills platform behaves like a good coach: it keeps the route clear, explains why steps matter, and lets learners control how they receive prompts and feedback.

How to evaluate edtech for skills training: a student usability checklist

If you’re buying for a district, college, nonprofit, or employer-funded program, you need a rubric that treats student usability as a first-class requirement—right alongside data privacy, integration, and cost.

Run a 30-minute “real learner” pilot before you commit

Answer first: If you can’t test with learners early, you’ll pay for the mistake later.

Use a short pilot with a representative group (including learners with accessibility needs). Give them real tasks:

  1. Find what to do next
  2. Complete a practice activity
  3. Submit an assignment
  4. Check feedback
  5. Change notification settings
  6. Access help without asking a teacher

Measure:

  • Time to first success (how fast they complete task #1)

In workforce development, clarity is retention.

If you want advanced analytics, keep them for staff dashboards. Learners need the next step, the deadline, and the reason it matters.

Designing edtech with students: a co-design approach that scales

Answer first: You don’t need a massive research budget to include student voice. You need a repeatable process.

The original study emphasized centering students through focus groups and questionnaires. Edtech developers and program leaders can do a lighter-weight version that still works.

Students can handle challenge. They don’t want confusion.

But you don’t have to wait. The student message is already clear:

Students aren’t asking for flashy features. They’re asking for clarity, meaningful engagement, and control over their experience.

That’s also how you close skills gaps. Learners finish what they can navigate.

If your organization is serious about workforce readiness, treat students as the primary users—not a stakeholder you consult after rollout.
