It doesn’t mean chatting with an assistant that tells you where to click.
It means you say what you want in plain language and the system executes:
- “Create a follow-up sequence for demo no-shows: three touches over seven days, stop on reply.”
- “Show me deals likely to slip this quarter and explain the drivers.”
- “If usage drops below 50% of plan, alert the CSM and draft a check-in email.”
No workflow builder required. No certification. The configuration layer becomes a conversation.

If an agent can’t reliably create the record, update the field, send the message, or open the ticket, it can’t deliver outcomes.
2) Guardrails that match real business risk
Good guardrails aren’t generic. They’re policy in product form.
Examples that work in real teams:
- “Draft emails freely, but send only with approval—unless it’s under 25/day to existing customers.”
- “You can update CRM fields, but never change contract values.”

If you’re buying software: ask these 7 questions
Use these in demos and RFPs. They’re hard to fake.
- What outcomes can I achieve by typing one sentence? (Ask for a live demo.)
- Which systems can it write to? (Not “integrates with”—writes to.)
- How does approval work? (Per action, per workflow, per threshold.)
- Can it simulate changes on historical data before applying them?
- Where does it store memory and business rules, and can I edit them?
- What’s the audit trail? (User, prompt, data accessed, actions taken.)
- What happens when it’s unsure? (Escalation and fallback behavior.)
If a vendor can’t answer these clearly, you’re buying a feature, not a system.
If you’re a founder: design as if the UI is optional
Most companies get stuck defending their UI because it’s what customers are used to.
I’ve found a better product exercise is this: Imagine the only interface you’re allowed is a chat box and an approvals inbox.
- What actions must be possible?
- What data must be unified?
- What policies must be configurable by non-technical users?
- What does “safe autonomy” look like in your domain?
Then build that—and keep the legacy UI only as a fallback for edge cases.
If you’re in ops: your value moves up the stack
Ops isn’t going away. It’s getting sharper.
In the conversation-first model, ops becomes:
- the author of business rules in natural language
- the owner of governance (permissions, thresholds, audit)
- the translator between exec intent and system behavior
That’s a more strategic job, and frankly, it’s a better one.
Where AI will power U.S. digital services next
U.S. businesses are already comfortable buying software subscriptions. The next purchasing wave is buying time back.
The winners won’t be the apps with the most features. They’ll be the systems that:
- reduce training time
- reduce reliance on consultants
- collapse implementation timelines
