If you’re building AI for agriculture and food systems, measure model quality separately for women and men.

That means tracking metrics like:

  • approval rates (credit) by gender,
  • error rates by gender,
  • default prediction accuracy by gender,
  • advisory adherence and outcomes by gender.

Then set thresholds. If the system performs worse for women, it doesn’t ship until it improves.

What this looks like in practice

  • Run a fairness audit before launch.
  • Re-train with targeted data collection where women are underrepresented.
  • Report outcomes internally the same way you’d report revenue or churn.

2) Collect the right data, not just more data

Most teams respond to bias by collecting “more data.” Better move: collect more representative data.

For Ghana’s agriculture sector, that often means:

  • sampling women farmers across different regions and crop systems,
  • capturing informal transactions (with consent) through agent networks,
  • supporting non-smartphone reporting (USSD, IVR, assisted registration),
  • recording plot-level realities (smaller plots, mixed cropping, labour constraints).

In agriculture, the interface is the product. If the channel doesn’t fit the user’s day, adoption stalls.

  • voice-first advisory in local languages for low literacy contexts,
  • USSD-based prompts for input purchases and reminders,
  • agent-assisted onboarding for credit and crop insurance,
  • community-based validation (groups/co-ops) that creates trusted identity signals.

This is where AI meets operations. The model can be brilliant; if onboarding fails, it won’t matter.

What policymakers and regulators in Ghana should demand

Ghana doesn’t need to copy-and-paste regulation from elsewhere. The country needs compliance rules built for our data realities—especially in agriculture and fintech.

Here are concrete demands that would raise the floor quickly:

Require “disaggregated outcomes” reporting

If an AI-based credit or farmer scoring system operates at scale, it should report key outcomes by gender:

  • approvals,
  • pricing/interest bands,
  • limits offered,
  • delinquency/default rates,
  • customer support resolution times.

If a provider can’t measure it, they can’t manage it.

Mandate explainability for adverse decisions

When a farmer is denied credit or excluded from a supply program, the provider should be able to explain the main decision factors in plain language.

Opacity is how discrimination hides.

Incentivize inclusive datasets as public infrastructure

Agriculture data is economic infrastructure. Ghana can co-fund or coordinate:

  • representative agronomic datasets,
  • anonymised market price histories across regions,
  • pest and disease image libraries that include diverse farming contexts,
  • farmer registry improvements that don’t rely only on smartphones.
