Consider two businesses in Kumasi:

  • A male-owned retail shop with frequent mobile money transactions and regular app usage.

  2. Audit feature impact: which variables drive rejections for women vs men? Remove or rework features that act as gender proxies.
  3. Create “thin-file” paths: design scoring routes that don’t depend heavily on long device histories.
  4. Add human review for edge cases: not forever—just until you have enough representative data.

Education and workplaces: the bias shows up differently, but the damage is similar

Fixing the gender data gap is also a growth strategy. Better models mean better approvals, better repayment prediction, better learning outcomes, and better talent decisions. And it’s how AI becomes trustworthy enough for mass adoption.
