Fraud has a calendar. It spikes when people are distracted: holiday shopping, year-end invoices, travel bookings, payroll catch-ups. December is prime time for authorised push payment (APP) scams, account takeover attempts, and synthetic identity activity—especially as instant payments and digital onboarding make money move faster than teams can review.

Most companies get this wrong: they treat fraud as a single “detection” problem. The better frame is fraud prevention as a system design problem. That’s where A2A (application-to-application) innovation becomes more than a plumbing upgrade—it’s a way to shrink the spaces fraudsters exploit, and give AI in finance higher-quality signals to act on.

Fraudsters love the gaps between systems: a PDF invoice emailed to accounts payable, a BSB/account number pasted into a banking form, a “supplier bank details update” request sent from a spoofed address. Those are classic entry points for business email compromise and payment redirection scams.

A2A changes the shape of the attack surface by pushing more of the payment journey into authenticated channels:

  • Fewer manual steps: less re-keying means fewer opportunities to swap payee details.
  • Richer context: payment messages can carry invoice IDs, references, customer/device context, and confirmation metadata.

Many fraud programs still rely on what I’d call screen-level automation: you’re automating user steps in a browser or app, not creating a trusted system-to-system path. A2A isn’t about making the UI faster; it’s about making the instructions harder to tamper with.

In practical terms, A2A shows up as:

  • Bank-to-bank and app-to-bank messaging flows
  • Secure payee confirmation services
  • API-based initiation and status updates
  • Digitally signed requests and response payloads

When those are in place, AI fraud detection can focus on higher-signal behaviors (intent, anomalies, relationships) rather than trying to patch holes caused by messy, inconsistent inputs.

AI + A2A is stronger than either alone (and it’s not close)

Answer first: AI improves fraud prevention when it has clean signals and clear decision points; A2A provides both.

AI models do well when they can learn patterns across consistent events. A2A helps create those events: initiation, payee validation, confirmation, settlement status, callbacks. Instead of “a payment happened,” you get a trail of structured milestones.

That changes what’s possible:

  • Earlier intervention: stop or step-up authenticate at initiation, not after funds leave.
  • Better explainability: you can point to specific anomalies (“new payee + unusual amount + device change + high-risk destination”).
  • Lower false positives: because the model isn’t guessing from incomplete data.

What AI should actually do in an A2A fraud stack

A lot of teams start with “we need machine learning.” I’d start with the jobs you want done:

  1. Risk scoring at the moment of intent

    • Score a payment instruction before it’s submitted to rails.
    • Combine device, session, behavior, payee history, and account signals.
  2. Anomaly detection on payee changes

    • Supplier details updates are where redirection fraud often begins.
    • Models should treat payee edits as high-risk events even if no payment occurs yet.
  3. Relationship analytics

    • Detect suspicious networks: shared devices, IPs, beneficiary clustering, mule funnels.
    • This is where graph techniques and ML shine in fintech fraud.
  4. Adaptive friction (step-up authentication)

    • Use AI to decide when to add friction (biometrics, call-back, passkey re-auth).
    • The goal is not “zero friction.” It’s friction proportional to risk.

If you’re running real-time payments, AI should also support real-time decisioning under tight latency budgets. That pushes you toward simpler, faster models in production (with heavier analysis offline).

The fraud patterns A2A helps most with (real examples)

Let’s make this concrete.

1) APP scams and invoice redirection

In an APP scam, the customer authorises the payment—but under false pretenses. The bank can’t “chargeback” reality. Preventing it means confirming payees and spotting suspicious intent.

A2A helps by enabling:

  • Payee verification/confirmation before sending
  • Consistent reference data (invoice numbers, beneficiary identifiers)
  • Tighter coupling between invoice systems and payment initiation

AI helps by spotting the story the scam tells:

  • First-time payee + large amount + urgency language in payment reference
  • Unusual time-of-day behavior
  • New device + new payee in the same session

2) Account takeover (ATO)

ATO is often a sequence: credential stuffing → session takeover → payee add → drain. A2A reduces the “free moves” a criminal gets.

In an A2A design, you can enforce:

  • Step-up auth on payee add, not just on login
  • Out-of-band confirmation bound to the specific payee and amount
  • Token binding / device binding for high-risk actions

AI can then focus on behavioral biometrics (typing cadence, navigation patterns), device intelligence, and session anomalies.

3) Card-to-account laundering and mule activity

Even if your product isn’t card-based, mule networks show up in A2A flows as:

  • Many small inbound transfers followed by rapid consolidation
  • High-velocity outflows to new beneficiaries
  • Beneficiary reuse patterns across seemingly unrelated accounts

This is where graph analytics plus rules-based guardrails works well. AI finds the patterns; A2A supplies consistent event logs and confirmations.

Building an A2A-first fraud program: a realistic blueprint

Answer first: Start by hardening the highest-risk moments—payee setup, payment initiation, and confirmation—then instrument everything so AI can learn from outcomes.

Teams often ask whether they should start with model upgrades or infrastructure upgrades. My opinion: start with the control points. If you don’t have dependable checkpoints, your models won’t matter.

Step 1: Map your fraud “decision moments”

List every point where a decision can prevent loss:

  • New payee creation or payee edit
  • Payment initiation
  • Payment approval (maker-checker)
  • Confirmation step (payee/amount)
  • Post-payment monitoring and recall workflows

Then define what’s possible at each moment: block, step-up, delay, warn, or allow.

Step 2: Standardise the data you feed the engine

AI in finance fails quietly when data is inconsistent. For A2A fraud prevention, standardise:

  • Payee identifiers and aliases
  • Device/session identifiers
  • Customer risk tier and historical behavior features
  • Reason codes and outcomes (blocked, warned, customer confirmed, fraud confirmed)

Treat your fraud data like a product. If it’s messy, the model will be messy.

Step 3: Combine rules with ML (don’t pick a side)

Rules are great for:

  • Regulatory or policy constraints (limits, restricted destinations)
  • Known bad indicators (compromised devices, impossible travel)
  • Fast, deterministic blocks

ML is great for:

  • Subtle patterns across many weak signals
  • Novel attacks and evolving scam scripts
  • Risk ranking and adaptive friction

The best setups use rules as guardrails and ML as a ranking engine.

Step 4: Engineer “safe speed” for real-time payments

Instant payments force a mindset shift: your prevention controls need to run in milliseconds, not minutes. Use:

  • Pre-computed features (rolling velocity, last-seen device)
  • Tiered decisioning (fast score first, deeper checks only if risky)
  • Clear fallbacks (if a downstream service is down, fail safe)

Step 5: Close the loop with feedback and recovery

A2A makes feedback loops easier because statuses and confirmations are machine-readable. Use that to:

  • Retrain models on confirmed fraud vs false positives
  • Measure customer warning effectiveness (did they abandon the payment?)
  • Improve dispute and recall processes with better traceability

Is A2A only relevant for banks?

No. Fintechs, payroll providers, marketplaces, and B2B platforms benefit even more because they sit at the messy intersection of invoices, payouts, and identity.

It can if you treat it like a black box. The safer approach is human-auditable decisioning: clear reason codes, threshold governance, and strong monitoring for bias and drift.

What’s the first metric to track?

Track prevented loss per 1,000 payments alongside false positive rate and customer drop-off. If you only track fraud rate, you’ll accidentally punish good customers.

Where A2A and AI in finance go next (2026 expectations)

Answer first: The next phase is about verified identity, verified payees, and verified intent—wired into the payment itself.

Across Australia and other fast-payments markets, customers now assume money moves instantly. The expectation that’s catching up is that fraud controls should be instant too—and not reliant on customers reading warning banners.

What I expect to see more of in 2026:

  • Wider use of payee confirmation and payee reputation signals
  • More passkeys and phishing-resistant authentication for high-risk payment actions
  • AI models that use graph signals as a default, not an advanced option
  • Better “scam interruption” UX: specific warnings, not generic fear messages
